Sharing knowhow in offshore wind construction

Can LEGO help to reduce the cost of energy?

By Michael Lau, Senior Operational Safety Manager, A2SEA

It’s commonly said that the only difference between men and boys is the size of their toys. So it may seem completely backwards to have a room of fully grown offshore wind people playing with tiny LEGO block models to help coordinate the installation of some of the biggest ‘toys’ in the world: offshore wind turbines. Strange, perhaps, but it’s clearly an innovative approach that, in its own small way, can contribute to lowering the levelised cost of energy (LCoE).

Everyone likes a winner: Congratulations to SSE

By Mette Jørvad
Director, Head of Communication & Marketing

Everyone likes to win. This year, it wasn’t quite our turn, although we did come a close second to the winners of Renewable UK’s Health & Safety Award 2017, the British energy company SSE, which is headquartered in Scotland. But instead of just blowing our own trumpet about being the still proud runner-up (we did make the announcement on our company website), we’d like to applaud the efforts of our offshore wind colleagues.

A2SEA shows off its Olympic teamwork

By Jens Frederik Hansen, CEO, A2SEA

An organisation that can work well together as a team is the pride and joy of any CEO. And A2SEA’s recent team-building day was certainly a day to remember. Not just because my own team won (that’s not the point of a team-building day, of course), but because the company’s Team Built spirit truly came to the fore.

Arranged at Vejlefjord, and surrounded by a beautiful park and the fjords themselves, as many of the company’s staff as could be gathered for the day were put through their paces at the A2SEA Olympic Games. It was a great day that had everyone involved, at times giving their utmost in athletic performance, at other times cheering their team members on. And I’m quite sure the company’s current “From Fredericia to Berlin” fitness drive, which has almost everyone walking the equivalent of 10,000 steps a day for 60 days, helped us all to look more like Olympic stars, too.

The organisation really got behind the event – and we were lucky with the weather, which is no easy feat in Denmark, if you’re familiar with a typical Danish summer!

When the mobilisation gets tough, the tough get mobilising

Monday, 30 June 2015: SEA CHALLENGER began mobilisation prior to installing 97 Siemens 6MW turbines at the Gode Wind 1+ 2 wind farms in the North Sea.

The task, which took place from 30 June to 31 July, called for the preparation of sea fastenings for turbine components, an extension of the main crane boom and the installation of a helideck. And, of course, everything had to be done in parallel and in a safe, well-coordinated manner. For added complexity, planned maintenance would be carried out simultaneously, too. Continue reading

Teamwork can be tough

By Tony Millward, Senior Project Manager, A2SEA A/S

Complex geotechnics, a tight, seven-month winter project, and a client whose programme called for multiple, simultaneous vessel operations. With demands like these, the Anholt project needed as much as it could get of that magic ingredient: teamwork. And its steep learning curves meant, however, that the A2SEA team was under plenty of pressure. Continue reading
