The final month of 2013 saw wind power break a bunch of records in the UK. More power was generated than ever before.
The proportion of power supplied by wind, as opposed to other electricity sources, was also higher than ever. And from 16-22 December, wind provided an unprecedented 13% of the total electricity needs for Britain. Finally, on a single day – Saturday 21 December – wind covered 17% of business and consumer needs!
Of course, there’s still plenty of room for improvement in the Big Picture of UK renewables. Scotland, for example, is far ahead with more than 40 percent of energy consumption in 2012 alone coming from green sources.
And, while the stats show an increase in the share of power produced from renewable energy, the UK is still largely dependent on fossil fuels.
In fact, according to the EU, the UK is still below the 27 country average for renewable energy share – and in danger of missing its 2020 target: to deliver 15% of energy demands from renewable sources.
And steadily rising energy prices may also put pressure on increased investment in greener, but initially more expensive energy sources.
